Olympic Sailing Program Announces New US Sailing Development Team;
Applications Now Being Accepted for 2010
November 2, 2009 (Portsmouth, R.I.) - Applications are now being
accepted for the 2010 US Sailing Development Team (USSDT), a new, youth
pipeline team supported by US SAILING's Olympic Sailing Committee (OSC).
Formerly known as the US Sailing Team - U18 and US Sailing Team - U23,
the USSDT was created for young athletes who have been identified as
future Olympic prospects.
USSDT members will receive elite-level coaching, guidance and mentoring
from the Olympic coaching staff who will help these athletes acquire the
skills to make independent decisions and to compete at the Olympic
level. In addition, these athletes will benefit from joint training with
US Sailing Team AlphaGraphics (USSTAG) members and other top young
sailors from across the United States. The OSC will also support these
athletes with shipping and logistical assistance and advice, as well as
access to the OSC's Performance Enhancement Team of physical therapists,
trainers and nutritionists.
The OSC is currently accepting applications from talented sailors, aged
13 years or older as of January 1, 2010, who have shown a strong work
ethic, willingness to work within a team, and good results at
international events and high-level domestic events. Applicants should
also have the ability and commitment to train within the OSC's system
and reach an elite international level. The OSC will choose qualified
candidates up to and including the following number of sailors in these
classes:
* Laser Radial: Up to 12 sailors, including at least 3 female
sailors
* Laser: Up to 5 sailors
* I420: Up to 8 teams
* 29er: Up to 4 teams
* 470: Up to 4 teams
* 49er: Up to 2 teams

The OSC will work with the members of the USSDT to create joint training
and racing opportunities, while respecting other demands on the sailor

the USSDT Selection Guidelines on the US Sailing Teams web site:

About the US Sailing Development Team
The US Sailing Development Team (USSDT) is managed by the United States
Sailing Association (US SAILING), the national governing body for the
sport of sailing and sailboat racing. Selected annually, the USSDT is
supported and administered exclusively by the US Olympic Sailing
Committee (OSC) of US SAILING. The OSC's mission is to develop sailors
for Olympic-caliber competition and to prepare them for qualification to
the US Sailing Team AlphaGraphics (USSTAG) and the Olympic Sailing Team.
The OSC supports these athletes with coaching and by facilitating
training and racing with and against the best national and international
competition. Founded in 1897 and headquartered in Portsmouth, Rhode
Island, US SAILING is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. US SAILING
offers training and education programs for instructors and race
officials, supports a wide range of sailing organizations and
communities, issues offshore rating certificates, and provides
administration and oversight of competitive sailing across the country.
