The 25th Robert Paul Arrigan Memorial Regatta was sailed this weekend at
Georgetown University. Robert “Bobby” Arrigan was a member of the
Georgetown Sailing team in his Freshman Year at Georgetown in 1984-85. His
life was cut short in a tragic accident in the summer of his Freshman year
and this regatta is sailed in his honor every spring. Bobby’s parents Judge
and Mrs. Robert Arrigan along with Bobby’s Aunt and Uncle and Cousins came
to the regatta. Former teammates David Blair and Christine Zebrowski as
well as past Georgetown Athletic Directors Joe Lang, Pat Thomas, and Dave
and Martha Swanson came to support the team and the Arrigan’s as well.

The format of the regatta is nine teams with both divisions racing at the
same time. Saturday saw very shifty winds ranging from NE to SE on the same
leg and varying in velocity depending on the size of the plane that was
landing. Nine races were sailed and no protests were filed.

Sunday’s forecast called from great wind but it didn’t materialize until the
boats were sailing in to the dock. We raced three races in the Potomac
River in East winds of 3-8mph. Many thanks to the Georgetown Sailors who
ran the regatta in particular Amanda Hassler, Dave Nicol, Mike Clark, Hugh
McBride and Dan Eichler, thanks as well to Eddie Wolcutt for his help with
running the races.
